The Valedictorian lunch for recipients of this time-honored achievement from Winter Park High School (WPHS), held annually, dates to its first gathering in 1996.  The Valedictorian lunch was the brainchild of Kenneth F. Murrah who graduated with the 80-member WPHS class of 1951 and who practiced law for over 50 years and served his community tirelessly.  As a board member of the Winter Park Public Library (WPPL), Murrah felt the scholastic accomplishments of area high school seniors needed to be supported by the public library. The luncheon was one of the happiest days in the year for this civic leader and prior to his death ensured with an endowment gift that the library could carry on with its annual valedictorian lunch.

The 26 valedictorians and salutatorian from the 2018 graduating class of WPHS were honored at this year’s event that took place at the Winter Park Garden Club at Mead Botanical Garden on April 24, 2018.  Each honoree was awarded a book presented to them by a board member or executive staff member of the WPPL.
