James Gamble Rogers II
Designs captured by renowned
photographer Harold Haliday Costain
James Gamble Rogers II
met famed photographer Harold Haliday Costain in 1930 while Costain was in
Florida on an assignment for The American Home magazine. In their
book, The Architecture of James Gamble Rogers II in Winter Park, Florida,
the authors (McClane & McClane) reveal that when Costain saw the Barbour
house as he drove through the streets of Winter Park, he said that he threw
on the brakes and hurried back to look at the house and photograph it. Soon,
Costain returned to take photographs of two more James Gamble Rogers' creations: the Ingram
House, and the McAllaster House.
The locations of these homes were as follows:
Barbour House
656 North Interlachen Avenue
Winter Park
Ingram House
842 Laurel Street
Orlando
McAllaster House
160 Alexander Place
Winter Park
Of course, the Barbour House came to be known as Casa Feliz, and when
the building was threatened with demolition in 2000, the people of Winter
Park came together to preserve the house. It was ultimately moved from its
original location to the site where it now sits, 656 North Park Avenue,
Winter Park. **
