Artist Statement

“Working off the wheel,” hand building with thin porcelain slabs; my intent has been to exploit the qualities of the clay, (its unique whiteness, elegance, and translucency) and the hand building process. Leaving large areas unglazed, the impressed texture of the canvas roller emerges and contrasts with the smooth glazed surfaces. Details of the incised lines and applied clay strips, inspired by the faces, glyphs and figures of Pre-Columbian pottery are emphasized as well as the simple slab form, creating a blend of Eastern and Western ceramic traditions.
