Local Train At Dinky Station · 1890

This railroad line was built in 1888 and it provided freight and passenger service between Orlando and Winter Park with several stops en route. The passenger fare was 15 cents each way. Many interesting and amusing tales have been related about this railroad line: this quaint wood-burning train’s bright orange coaches often left the tracks; it seldom stayed on a reliable schedule; the creaking, screeching noises it made when rounding a bend (plus its fragile qualities) earned it the name "Dinky"; and frequent unscheduled stops were made in the early years . . . mainly for repairs, but sometimes merely at the request of a passenger who wished to pick wildflowers!
That’s Lake Virginia in the background of the photo.
