Calico Club A club that stemmed from a love for square dancing and developed into deep friendships

Originally formed in the early 1950s, this Winter Park-based club started out as a group of congenial couples who got together every two weeks in order to go square dancing.  Throughout the years, they took part in other pastimes as well.  Later activities included preparing BBQ dinners and watching horse-racing . . . they would come together at the home of one of the members and avidly watch the Triple Crown races . . . competing to see who had selected the winning horses!  Celebrating birthdays and golden wedding anniversaries of the couples involved in the club were also important to the group.

Some names of the members of the Calico Club were: Everett and Takoohy Leedy, C.W. and Elizabeth Graves, Arthur Ray and Mary Miller, John and Priscilla Green, Henry and Billie Swanson, Charlie and Mary Root, B.P. and Kit Nelson, John and Neva Cox, Sam and Alice Thornton, Ed and Marge Greaves, Bob and Betty Johnson  . . . and more.

The collection consists of four photo albums which contain pictures, announcements, invitations, newspaper clippings, obituaries and funeral cards . . . from 1952 through to 2000.  Finally, the collection also contains several newspaper articles about one of their members, Henry Swanson, which cover his fascination with butterflies and the decades he spent researching them.
