Sources of Funding
Most public libraries rely heavily on tax dollars for their operating
revenue. Florida public libraries, on average, receive nearly 96%
of their funding from tax revenue. By comparison, your
Winter Park Public Library receives less than 70% of its operating
income from tax dollars. Over 25% of the annual operating
expenses of the Library are funded through charitable gifts and income
from charitable endowments established for the Library. Less than
5% of the cost of running the Library comes from user fees like overdue
fines, room reservations, and photocopier charges. Click the pie
chart below for a more detailed view of Winter
Park Public Library's funding sources.

Library Savings
Calculator
Have you ever wondered how much benefit your Library provides to the
local community? Last year Winter Park Public Library circulated
more than 531,000 items to local Library users! What if the
Library didn't exist and you had to obtain the same goods and services
in the local community?
If you had to buy a paperback book at the local bookstore, the
average cost would be about $15.00. Renting a DVD from the local video
rental costs about $3.50. An audio CD costs about $12. Audio books on
tape or CD are hard to find, and usually cost upwards of $25 per title
with best sellers often topping $75. If you multiply the
"non-Library cost" of everything Winter Park Public Library users
checked out last year, the total benefit exceeds $6.1 million
dollars! And that doesn't include the value of Library
programs, like children's story time, our "Read to Learn" tutoring
program, the adult "Mystery Book Club" or any of the Lifelong Learning
Institute programs. That's over $6.1 million dollars of benefit
from a non-profit organization with a budget of less than half that
amount.

Support your Winter
Park Public Library
There are many ways you can support your Library. We've highlighted three of the most popular.
Annual Fund - Contributions to our
Annual Fund help underwrite the
annual operating costs of the Library. You can give online or
print a contribution form and mail in your gift.
(Click here to make an Annual Fund gift.)
Memorial and Tribute Gifts -
During the holiday season, many patrons choose to honor or memorialize a
friend or family member with a gift to the Library. You can make a
tribute gift in any amount. (Click
here to make a tribute gift in honor or in memory of a loved one.)
Book-A-Year Endowments - If you'd
like a "gift that keeps on giving" you can give $300 to establish a
Book-A-Year endowment. Each year the Library will add a
new book, CD, or DVD to the Library's collection with an inscription "in
honor of" or "in memory of" the person you name. We'll send a card
to let your friend or family member inform them of your tribute.
It's an easy way to create a lasting legacy. For more information
about the Book-A-Year endowment or other lasting tributes, please call
our Development Coordinator, Ray Barr, at 407-623-3277. |
