Give Wisely:

We will take it, too!
Just like charities that advertise on the radio, the Winter Park Public Library gratefully accepts donations of tangible items including houses, boats, cars, artwork and other assets. These gifts are often most beneficial to the donor, who simply transfers title and receives the tax deduction.

Please let us know if we can assist you and put your assets to work for the benefit of the community. Contact Development Coordinator Phyllis Corkum at pcorkum@wppl.org or 407-623-3277.

Share Your IRA
From CNN Money
If you're 70½ or older, haven't taken the required minimum distribution on your traditional IRA this year, and don't need the cash for living expenses, you can donate all or part of it (up to $100,000) to avoid adding the amount to your taxable income.

An IRA-to-charity rollover can also reduce the taxes owed on Social Security benefits and make it easier to claim deductions requiring spending in excess of a certain income threshold, such as the one for medical expenses.

So even though you give up the charitable deduction, your tax bill will probably be lower than if you took the distribution, and then donated. Just be aware that this provision is set to expire at the end of 2011, "and there's low probability of extension," says financial planner Mark Joseph.

Added Benefit: No Income Taxes on a Required Distribution

The IRS Removes Tax-Exempt Status of 275,000 Groups
From Bloomberg Businessweek
The IRS says that 275,000 organizations have automatically lost their tax-exempt status because they failed to file required annual reports over the past three years. The tax agency believes that most of those being stripped of tax-exempt status are now defunct. But it also announced procedures for still-functioning organizations that seek to be reinstated.

The IRS says that in 2010 there were nearly two million tax-exempt organizations, of which about 1.3 million are religious and charitable groups. The list also includes social welfare groups, labor and agriculture organizations, business leagues and war veterans organizations.

The lesson: Give to organizations that you know and trust.

Former Patrons Plan for Our Future

The Winter Park Public Library has recently received bequests from the estates of the Margaret Ewing, L.T. Turner, Lawrence Signoreli and Janet Walker. We appreciate the generosity of these former patrons and their families for remembering the Library in their estate plans.

The Winter Park Public Library is fortunate to have endowment funds totaling more than $4 million. The Board of Trustees has set a goal to raise these funds to $10 million in order to secure the Library’s future and minimize dependency on annual fundraising efforts.

The Lamson League:
Winter Park Women Accomplish Big Things!

On a sunny November morning, 51 busy Winter Park women met at the lakeside home of Trustee Joan Clayton. Their task was to brainstorm ideas to help chart the course for the Library’s next 125 years as a beloved community resource.

The purpose of the meeting was to bring together community-minded women in an effort to support and enhance the work of the Winter Park Public Library. The first Lamson League meeting was building on the tradition of the women who founded the Library, including first librarian Evaline Lamson, and those women who have stepped forward to strengthen it at critical points in our history.

Breakout sessions that morning focused on the top priorities set by participants in a pre-meeting survey. The priorities were 1) beautification of the current facility, and 2) the addition of programming featuring authors of children’s literature and popular fiction and non-fiction.

The meeting closed with an invitation for the women present to become inaugural members of the Lamson League. The group will be initiating beautification and programming efforts to support the strategic goals of the Library set forth by the Trustees and staff.

What is The Heritage Society?

The Library Board of Trustees established The Heritage Society in our 125th anniversary year to inspire gift planning and to honor individuals who are dedicated to perpetuating the Library’s work. The Society promotes gifts that build Library endowment funds and that provide for the long-range stability and growth of this important community resource.

Members of the Society are supporters of the Library who have contributed a major cash gift, an endowment gift, or a planned gift that will benefit the Library some time in the future.
