What is a Database?

  • A collection of articles and information from popular magazines and
scholarly journals, newspapers and other reference works.

  • Can be searched by author, title, subject, keyword, publication and more.

  • Many offer complete, full-text articles to print, save, or email.

  • Is updated frequently (some every 24 hours).

  • Your tax dollars, via the Library, pay for this service.  That is why a library card is required.

How is a database different from a website?

  • Information on websites can come from anyone.  It can be biased and outdated.
Databases provide info from professionals and reputable publications to ensure accuracy.

  • Websites cannot always be searched.  A database offers simple to advanced searching.

  • Websites can be difficult to cite but databases offer examples of how to cite the articles.
