Using
WPPL Wireless Internet
This fact sheet is intended to provide you with basic
instructions on how to use WPPL Wireless,
our free public, wireless Internet service. Using this service, any
visitor can
access the Internet, the Library catalog and all databases the Library
subscribes to without any time limit and with the convenience of being
able to sit anywhere you chose in the building.
Technical assistance
Unfortunately, our staff cannot provide you with individual
assistance in accessing this service. We cannot assist you in making
changes to your network settings or performing any troubleshooting on
individual machines. For questions not covered by this guide, you are
referred to your owner’s manual or other support services offered by the
manufacturer of your wireless device.
WPPL Wireless hardware requirement:
- a laptop (or computer device) that has been setup for wireless (a
standard IEEE 802.11b or 802.11g wireless network adapter.)
Accessing WPPL Wireless
1. Open your wireless network screen (refer to the documentation that
came with your wireless device for more on this step -- often this is
just a click of a wireless network icon)
2. Connect to WPPL Wireless via the
network by choosing one of the three “wpplwireless1", “wpplwireless2",
or “wpplwireless3" . No
username, password or encryption is needed.
3. Open your Web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and start
surfing.
The WPPL Wireless “zone”
The zone is on all floors in every room. You can move around to see
where you get the best signal. Your software will tell you when a
wireless network is available, the network’s name and signal strength.
WPPL Wireless etiquette
- If your laptop doesn’t have a charged battery, you can use electrical
plugs on the outer walls under windows, but DO NOT run cords across
walkways.
- Please turn the sound on your laptop completely OFF. If you
want to use files with audio, you’ll need to bring a set of headphones
and keep the volume low.
- WPPL Wireless is connected through
our filtering software to help prevent access to pornography. All
patrons in our building are governed by our Library policies including
the “Internet Use Policy.”
The Reference Desk can provide you with a copy of this policy if you
need to review it.
Security
- The security of your laptop is your responsibility. We strongly
encourage all WPPL Wireless users to
install up-to-date virus protection on their laptops or wireless devices
and to download the latest security patches for their operating system
and software. The Library is not responsible for any damage to patron
laptops due to hackers, viruses, etc.
- As with most public “wireless hotspots” you should assume the
connection is not secure. WPPL Wireless
is open to all users (no password) and is not encrypted. Keep that in
mind before accessing sensitive personal or business information.
